About the project

This blog is:

  • an introduction to a much broader project (see below)
  • a chance to air ideas about and around the subject in an informal manner
  • a place for articles on subjects of interest that are related to (but not necessarily central to) the main areas of study
  • a recruitment opportunity for volunteers to help with the mammoth task of research

The Inns of Cambridge project will have a number of outcomes:

  • a published study (book) on the pubs and inns of Cambridge, dealing with their history thematically (for example, politics, the role of women, the role of pubs).
  • an online database of Cambridge pubs which is freely available and can be updated (perhaps as a wiki).
  • an oral history database, included in the main online database.
  • educational and artistic projects, resulting from workshops with local schools and community organisations.

Merton Arms (Northampton Street, Cambridge) – the first in a series of pub sign designs for the lost pubs of Cambridge by Annabel Lee. Kingsley Amis (author) was a pub regular when teaching at the university. He is depicted chatting to the barmaid with whom he had an affair.
The Merton Crest is cunningly represented in the dress design of the barmaid.
